So glad to be with you today. Our scripture Sunday is one that is difficult to reconcile with today's culture. We live in a world that says "only the strong survive" but in our scripture for Sunday, 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, Paul writes, "when I am weak, then I am strong."
I do not want to give too much away, but I am going to say out loud what you already know: you have a weakness. I know that you and I do our best to hide our weaknesses, our failures, our past and our problems, but Paul says that he boasts in weakness so that God's power may rest upon him.
The good news of our text is that God loves us, no matter who we are or what we have done. The good news of our text is that God's grace is sufficient for you and even a sinner like me. What hope we have knowing that Jesus knows us fully, but loves us anyway!
So, I challenge you today to boast in your weakness, even if it is on this blog. Reply in the comments section and be encouraged that you are not alone in your struggle. We do so not to say, woe is me, but instead to say this is the place in my life where I need to allow God to work and trust that His strength will be enough.
What is your weakness? Is it chocolate cake? (Sorry, that is mine). Seriously, do you have a bad temper? Do you harbor ill will towards someone in your past? Do you suffer with depression or do you have OCD tendencies? Do you have a past you would like to forget, perhaps coming from a broken home or from a broken marriage? Do you struggle with substance abuse, or alcohol abuse, or dare I say, gluttony to quell the pain you feel inside? Perhaps your weakness is pride or arrogance or even something I have not listed.
Regardless of what your weakness is, take heart: God's strength is enough for you to endure and overcome. Do you want to know what my great weakness is? It is feeling like I have to do enough to earn love, whether it be from you or from God. But the good new is this: God's grace is sufficient to help me in this area, and God's grace covers your greatest weakness as well.
When we are weak, we are strong.
