The Calling to Serve

8/9/2012

Dear Church Family,

I want to say thank you for a wonderful 10th anniversary celebration. The service was great and the food was fantastic. Have you ever seen so much food in your life? I would love to hear your feedback about the whole day. Please use this comment section to tell us what you thought.

The service this Sunday will be a little different because this is our Deacon Servant Ordination Service. The Deacon servant role is based off the installation of the very first deacon servants in Acts 6:1-7. The role of a Deacon Servant here is different than in many other churches. The Deacon Servants are not a board which makes decisions; in fact, they hold no power at all here. Instead, the Deacon Servants are people called to serve. They are given two main tasks: the first is to help in the personal care ministry of the church and the second is to unify the church in the midst of dispute or despair.

The other significant difference between a typical deacon board and our Deacon Servant ministry is that both men and women are called to serve. With that said, we have two women rolling off: Eugenia McDilda and Shirley Odum. Thank you ladies for your tireless efforts and service to this community. And I am proud to say that we are ordaining a new female deacon servant this week, Mrs. Chris Rustin, and we are installing Mr. Derrell Lynn back into this servant leadership position. Please prepare your heart for this important service.

One last note...all of us, whether we are called as deacon servants or not, are called to serve. My question for you to ponder this week is this: what are you doing to serve others in Jesus name?

Have a great week,

Josh

Just a comment for those who have not yet been involved in service, it does have two sides. When I first considered service I thought of the time and effort I would l have to put in, this is a natural thought process, however the most surprising thing happened, I found myself being served. The extra study time, the extra prayer time, all brings me to a closer relationship with my Lord. To hear some of the responses and questions from the kids inspire me, it helps me remember the feeling of wonderment (my word for wonder and amazement) of God. It keeps me looking at God from that childlike view. To see God working in children never grows old, to see these children growing in Christ is an awesome thing. So yeah, it is work, and it does take a lot of time, but what you get in return, well it is treasures, little gems of time that, that affirm my faith.
