Taming the tongue

Dear Blog friends,

So glad to be with you. I am going to try to get back on the schedule of Thursday blogging...I'm just a day late and a dollar short as always.

Our text this week is very familiar, James 3:1-12. James is talking to us about our speech. In it, James says that the tongue is a "fire," and later, "full of deadly poison." I think we can all agree that this is true because we know how hurtful words can be.

Words seem innocent enough...but we know words are so much more than ways to communicate. They carry the weight of the world at times. The carry human destiny at times. In fact, words can lead someone to rise or fall in just one sentence.

Think back in your own life. Do you remember somebody sharing encouraging words with you just when you needed to hear it? In the same way, can you remember someone sharing disparaging remarks against you at the very worst time? I bet you remember that even more than those good words. I share all of that to say we must be careful what we say.

But frankly, James says we must be careful in what we say for a deeper reason. James declares that what we say to others reveals our inner character; in fact, it reveals the true nature of our relationship with God.

Think about what you have said this week and ask yourself one question: does what you have said let others know you are a Christian? If not, then there is work to do.

I'll see you tomorrow for the Service in September Community Service day, and on Sunday for worship.

Thanks for reading,
Josh

Sports Corner (7-2)
No one took the challenge last week to make picks (publicly that is). Good thing for me because I was not so good, though above .500. I was 3-2 last week...I will be better this week.

UGA plays FAU (Florida Atlantic)...that's bad, but not as bad as Presbyterian, eh GT?
UGA blows them out...probably by 5 touchdowns.

GT plays UVA (Virginia). UVA beat GT last year in an upset. While neither team has looked overwhelmingly good, (when have they ever :) ?) GT will win this year. The game is at Bobby Dodd, and GT has too much for UVA to handle. Tight game...GT wins by 6.

GSU plays Elon *Tough game. Thhis game will feature Elon’s fifth-ranked FCS defense against Georgia Southern’s second-rated FCS offense. Did you know Elon or Georgia Southern leads the SoCon in 13 of the 17 primary categories that are included in the NCAA team rankings? GSU is in for a tough fight but after coming off an upset loss at the Citadel, Coach Monken will have his team ready to compete. GSU wins late by 3.

Featured game of the week: UF vs. UT. Florida and Tennessee will match up at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville. What an atmosphere. I am not sure what team will show up. The UF who struggles, or the UF that seems to dominate? What UT team will show up? The one who can't tackle, or the one who can complete every pass? Though UT is favored at home, I smell an upset. UF wins (2 points?)

Falcons play at Denver this week on Monday Night football. What a matchup! Time to see Peyton Manning returning to form against a suspect defense that gave up substantial points to the Chiefs last week. Though I am so excited about the Falcons offense, I am worried about their pass protection and their inability to run the ball consistently. Falcons lose by 10 at Mile High...(Just too hard to win on the Road in the NFL).
